What is incest taboo: Family Disruption Theory? Incest taboo refers to the universal prohibition of sexual relations or marriage among the members of the same family. So there is a prohibition of sexual relations between mother and son, father and daughter, and brother and sister. There is hardly any society that permits such relations.
There are various explanations for the incest taboo. Family disruption theory is one of the explanations for the incest taboo. The anthropologist Malinowski and Radcliffe Brown explain the incest taboo from the functional viewpoint. They say that the human youth has the longest period of dependence on its elders. This prolonged period of dependence needs a stable unit to take care of the young. If sexual relations were to be allowed among family members, there will be intense competition among them. So, the family will not function as a stable unit in the interest of its members. The socialisation of young people will get completely disrupted.
According to Malinowski and Redcliff Brown, the incest taboo serves the function of reducing conflict and promoting cooperation among family members by prohibiting sexual relations among them.
To conclude, this explanation appears to be more convincing than the childhood familiarity theory or psycho-analytic theory of incest taboo.
