The India-China War took place in 1962. China had decisively defeated India in that war. One of the reasons for our defeat was the failure of our intelligence service. So, after the Chinese war, India started to grow covert capabilities. So, with the help of the USA, India had established the Research And Analysis Wing i.e. RAW in Sept 1968.

The newly founded RAW developed the capabilities for deep penetration espionage to target China. Thus the primary function of the RAW was gathering foreign intelligence, counter-terrorism, advising Indian policy markers, and advancing India’s foreign strategic interest.

India used her new tool i.e. RAW to target Pakistan in 1971. RAW played a very significant role in the independence of Bangladesh. The Special Frontier Force ( SFF ), which is a part of RAW, has participated with exemplary skill in Operation Eagle, securing Chittagong hills during the Bangladesh War of 1971.

The Special Frontier Force( SFF ) also called Establishment 22 personnel aided Sikkim’s accession to the Union of India in 1975. It is said that Establishment 22 trained Tamil terrorists and armed rebels operating against the pro-china regime in Myanmar.

Former PM I.K. Gujral ended RAW’s offensive operation against Pakistan. The PM Narsimha Rao wound up RAW’s eastern operations.
